Al, Growth & Stewardship
Economic development is often described as creating the conditions for prosperity. Stewardship is making sure that prosperity is sustainable.
That balance has been on my mind recently as conversations continue in Christina Lake about Al data centres and the infrastructure that supports them. While the discussion may be local, the questions it raises are much bigger than our community.
Artificial intelligence is advancing quickly. New technologies are creating opportunities for investment, innovation, and economic growth. For small communities, those opportunities can be significant. They can bring jobs, tax revenue, and new ways to participate in an evolving economy.
“Economic development creates the conditions for prosperity. Stewardship ensures that prosperity can endure. The future will require both.”
At the same time, these technologies require resources. Energy, water, land, and infrastructure are all part of the equation. As a society, we are still learning how to evaluate the trade-offs, understand the opportunity costs, and determine what responsible growth looks like.
The question is not whether we support economic opportunity. We should. The question is how we ensure that growth occurs alongside thoughtful planning, clear oversight, and responsible resource management. In many ways, this is not just a conversation about Al. It is a conversation about how communities adapt to change.
Like many emerging issues, the answers are still taking shape. But asking thoughtful questions today is part of building resilient communities tomorrow.
The biggest question? How do we welcome innovation while protecting the resources, trust, and quality of life that make this place worth investing in?
